Innovative Architectural Design at AC Hotel Savannah Enhancing Safety and Aesthetics

The AC Hotel Savannah was designed and built with beautiful interiors, while also meeting the requirements of the International Building Code. Creative use of Smoke Curtains in a couple of configurations was a key feature in creating a seamless flow between public spaces and the elevator openings. These elements not only fulfill life safety requirements but also elevate the guest experience, setting a new standard in hotel design.

Elevating Spaces with Smart Design

Specifically, the Georgia Building Code, and the International Building Code, its based on, requires Smoke Protection at any opening in the elevator shaft (reference IBC 2018 Chapter 3006), to be paired with Fire-Rated elevator doors to protect occupants against smoke and fire. Closed-off elevator lobbies are one way permitted to provide this protection; however, using lobbies constricts the open aesthetic the design team was after, as well as unnecessarily taking up floor space with a minimally decorated room that no one likes to spend time in. At the AC Hotel in Savannah, utilizing deployable Smoke Curtains to create an "On-Demand" lobby enclosure in the presence of smoke allowed the space in front of the elevator to be open, full of character, and part of the most efficient layout of the hotel's main corridors.

Upper floors utilize the "Additional Door" provisions of the Building Code that seal off smoke control at the elevator opening (3006.3.3), allowing the elevators to open directly onto hotel sleeping corridors. The same open aesthetic is achieved, while also allowing for more revenue-generating rooms on the upper floors!

Such versatility is a substantial benefit for guests and hotel staff. For guests, it means having options—whether they want a quiet corner to read or a vibrant space to connect with others. For hotel operators, this flexibility leads to more efficient use of resources and improved guest satisfaction ratings.

A Harmonious Blend

Ultimately, the AC Hotel Savannah is a prime example of how safety and design can coexist harmoniously. The smart integration of safety features into the overall aesthetic creates a welcoming environment without sacrificing safety. This balance is critical in today’s hospitality landscape, where guests increasingly seek both comfort and security.

Final Thoughts

The innovative use of smoke curtains highlights how modern architecture can address safety concerns while prioritizing design. As guests navigate through the hotel, they cannot help but notice the thoughtfulness behind every element—from spacious designs to well-chosen decor. This meticulous attention to detail elevates their experience and sets a high bar for future hotel designs.
